Russian beauty queen puts spotlight on Russia's official corruption

Her public denunciation of Russia's corruption surprised some this week.?It also coincided with one of the Kremlin's periodic efforts to convince Russians that something is being done about it.

Natalia Pereverzeva - a Russian beauty queen - spoke out again against endemic corruption during a contest in the Phillipines.

A Russian beauty queen garnered global headlines this week?by standing by her impassioned denunciation of the endemic corruption that demoralizes society and saps the economic life of her homeland, made in an essay she'd written that was supposed to be about why she's proud to be a Russian.

"But my Russia ? it is also my poor, long-suffering country, mercilessly torn to pieces by greedy, dishonest, unbelieving people," Natalia Pereverzeva?wrote in an essay that was part of her entrance requirement to the Miss Earth competition this week in Manila, Philippines.

"My Russia ? it is a great artery, from which the 'chosen' few people are draining away its wealth. My Russia is a beggar. My Russia cannot help her elderly and orphans. From it, bleeding, like from a sinking ship, engineers, doctors, teachers are fleeing, because they have nothing to live on," she wrote.

Ms. Pereverzeva's outburst was almost certainly spontaneous, based on her own personal experience and straight from the heart.

But it also happens to coincide with one of the periodic anticorruption crusades launched from the Kremlin to convince the Russian public that something is being done to combat the official graft that by some accounts?siphons off as much as a third of Russia's gross domestic product?and undermines the effectiveness of all government efforts,?from law enforcement?to preparations for the Olympic Games.

Recent weeks have seen the fall from grace of at least one top official, as well as the most sweeping set of allegations about official graft ? involving several government agencies ? to be revealed to the public in years. Some experts suggest that Vladimir Putin, now embarked on his third term as president, may be using his vast powers and political capital to finally confront Russia's most intractable scourge. Others argue that it's a public relations campaign at best, or more likely a cover for political score-settling among bureaucrats, which is traditionally the most common reason that explicit corruption charges surface in Russia.

Hard numbers on corruption

Whatever the deeper political truth, the facts about everyday official graft so far revealed are truly shocking, and they provide some hard numbers to back up Pereverzeva's emotional assertions.??? ?

Spain starts 2013 funding with 3.9 billion-euro bond sale

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain sold nearly 4 billion euros of bonds with ease at an auction on Thursday that kicked off its funding program for a daunting 2013 when Madrid must shoulder regional debt needs and will struggle to meet deficit targets.

The Treasury beat the top end of the target of 2.5-3.5 billion euros at borrowing costs that were slightly down on previous outings of the same paper but remain too high for comfort.

The average yield on the 2021 bond was 5.517 percent, compared with around 5.6 percent for the benchmark 10-year on the secondary market, a long way from over 7 percent levels in July.

"It's a clear reflection that sentiment in Spain has improved markedly," said bond strategist at RIA Capital Markets Nick Stamenkovic.

"They are already funded for 2012 and the market is betting that Spain will ask for a bailout early next year when they face a (wall of issuance)."

Madrid faces some 28 billion euros in debt redemptions in January while in 2013 the country's funding needs rise to 207 billion euros from 186 billion euros this year.

This could go higher still if it overshoots its deficit target of 6.3 percent this year and 4.5 percent next year, which the Bank of Spain warned on Wednesday was possible.

Spain sold 3.6 billion euros of a bond maturing October 31, 2015, 645 million euros of a bond due July 30, 2017 and 1.5 billion euros of paper maturing April 30, 2021.

Concerned that the welfare system could slip into deficit this year, from a balanced budget target, the economy ministry said separately that the social security reserve fund will subscribe a new 3.3 billion euros 5-year sovereign bond.

Madrid is also expected to help struggling regional governments, cut out of debt markets, which could add a further 40 billion euros to its debt bill.

Spain's economy has been in recession for a year, the second since 2009, and is not expected to return to growth until late next year at the earliest. Some 25 percent of Spanish workers are unemployed and deep spending cuts and tax hikes have fuelled increasingly violent protests across the country.

However, Spain's risk premium versus Germany has fell to around 423 basis points from above 650 bps since the European Central Bank said it would buy up debt on the open market to hold down interest rates for any country that signs up for aid.

Madrid has said it wants to be sure the ECB measure would reduce financing costs, citing a spread of 200 bps as more representative of economic fundamentals, though the central bank's head, Mario Draghi, said he could not make such a promise. ($1 = 0.7801 euros)

Cartilage made easy with novel hybrid printer

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? The printing of three-dimensional tissue has taken a major step forward with the creation of a novel hybrid printer that simplifies the process of creating implantable cartilage.

The printer has been presented Nov. 22, in IOP Publishing's journal Biofabrication, and was used to create cartilage constructs that could eventually be implanted into injured patients to help re-grow cartilage in specific areas, such as the joints.

The printer is a combination of two low-cost fabrication techniques: a traditional ink jet printer and an electrospinning machine. Combining these systems allowed the scientists to build a structure made from natural and synthetic materials. Synthetic materials ensure the strength of the construct and natural gel materials provide an environment that promotes cell growth.

In this study, the hybrid system produced cartilage constructs with increased mechanical stability compared to those created by an ink jet printer using gel material alone. The constructs were also shown to maintain their functional characteristics in the laboratory and a real-life system.

The key to this was the use of the electrospinning machine, which uses an electrical current to generate very fine fibres from a polymer solution. Electrospinning allows the composition of polymers to be easily controlled and therefore produces porous structures that encourage cells to integrate into surrounding tissue.

"This is a proof of concept study and illustrates that a combination of materials and fabrication methods generates durable implantable constructs," said James Yoo, M.D., Ph.D., Professor at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and an author on the study. "Other methods of fabrication, such as robotic systems, are currently being developed to further improve the production of implantable tissue constructs."

In this study, flexible mats of electrospun synthetic polymer were combined, layer-by-layer, with a solution of cartilage cells from a rabbit ear that were deposited using the traditional ink jet printer. The constructs were square with a 10cm diagonal and a 0.4mm thickness.

The researchers tested their strength by loading them with variable weights and, after one week, tested to see if the cartilage cells were still alive.

The constructs were also inserted into mice for two, four and eight weeks to see how they performed in a real life system. After eight weeks of implantation, the constructs appeared to have developed the structures and properties that are typical of elastic cartilage, demonstrating their potential for insertion into a patient.

The researchers state that in a future scenario, cartilage constructs could be clinically applied by using an MRI scan of a body part, such as the knee, as a blueprint for creating a matching construct. A careful selection of scaffold material for each patient's construct would allow the implant to withstand mechanical forces while encouraging new cartilage to organise and fill the defect.

Ark. girl chained to dresser last year now dead

(AP) ? Authorities on Wednesday were investigating the death of a 6-year-old girl whose father is in prison for chaining her to a dresser last year in northwest Arkansas.

Jersey Bridgeman's body was found in a nearby vacant house about 10 minutes after she was reported missing Tuesday morning, Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson said.

Police in the city about 215 miles northwest of Little Rock are treating her death as a homicide, but they have not said how the girl died or released the names of any suspects. Simpson said autopsy results are pending.

More than 100 people gathered to mourn the child at a candlelight vigil Tuesday at the Children's Advocacy Center of Benton County near Bentonville, the center's executive director, Beverly Engle, said.

"There was a unique quality about Jersey," she said. "A little old soul, but such a delight."

Engle said Jersey was interviewed last year at the center when the abuse allegations were reported to police in nearby Rogers. According to a court document, the girl told officers she slept on the floor in the same room as her father, David Bridgeman, and her stepmother, Jana Bridgeman.

"She said that Jana and David chain her to the dresser because she had gotten up and eaten some pies, cereal, and bread," Rogers Police Detective Larry Taylor wrote in the court affidavit.

He added that the girl "stated that they put a belt around her waist so that she could not get up and get any food."

Both the father and stepmother pleaded guilty in June to false imprisonment, permitting abuse of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Jana Bridgeman, also identified as Jana Slinkard in court records, is serving a 12-year prison sentence, plus three years for a probation revocation, according to online Department of Correction records.

David Bridgeman is serving an 18-year prison sentence. Prison records show he has a tattoo that says "Jersey."

He admitted to chaining his daughter to a dresser with a belt last year after a woman who was staying with the couple contacted police about possible child abuse, according to court records. That woman said she found the girl chained to a dresser with a silver chain and what appeared to be a dog collar.

David Bridgeman told an investigator that his daughter got into medication and other things around the house, so he and his wife decided to chain her to the dresser at night so she couldn't wander off, according to court records.

"He said that he thinks she may be sleepwalking and that they discussed buying a child gate, but since he does not have a job, they could not afford to buy one at that time," Taylor, the detective, wrote in the court affidavit.

The father said he cut a belt to make it fit around his daughter's ankle and added a lock on the chain after she pulled it off, according to court records.

At some point, his daughter complained that the collar hurt her leg, so he chained her by the waist instead, court records indicate.

"It should be noted that the chain that David used was approximately one to two feet in length and appeared to be a dog choke collar," Taylor wrote in the affidavit.

Jana Bridgeman's attorney, Billy Bob Webb, declined to comment Wednesday. David Bridgeman's attorney, Sarah Ashley, didn't return a phone message seeking comment.

The FBI has dispatched agents to assist in the homicide investigation, spokeswoman Kimberly Brunell said.

Google plans to fix an Android networking bug... after 2.5 years

HTC Desire review conclusion

It's fair to say that some bugs take awhile to fix, and a public schedule isn't always an option; HTC knows this well. Still, Google may be pushing the limits with the solution for a longstanding Android bug that prevents resolving hostnames on some WiFi networks without using the full domain. The company has officially committed to providing a patch -- 2 years, 6 months and 23 days after the bug was first reported on April 29th, 2010. Google explains that the "next major release" after Android 4.2 should hold the remedy, and claims that a mix of "prioritization and resources" prevented the team from sorting things out between Android 2.1 and now. We'll take Google's word for it, although the vow won't be much comfort for anyone who's still holding on to that original HTC Desire and can't upgrade. At least the Mountain View team won't have to deal with any 17-year-old security flaws.

(AP) ? As an Army general faces a string of sexual misconduct charges involving female officers, his wife is seeking to stir a broader look at often taboo subjects in military marriages: adultery, the strain of separation and the stress of war.

Rebecca Sinclair stayed away from the days-long military hearing earlier this month at Fort Bragg, N.C., where the allegations against her husband, Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair, were revealed in detailed testimony. Women officers described an affair, forced sexual encounters and a series of explicit email exchanges with the former deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan.

But his wife has since made herself a public face of his defense, and of what she sees as the toll of a decade of war on military couples, many of whom have found themselves in a repeated pattern of deployments, homecomings and moves.

"I am not condoning anything, and I'm not excusing my husband's infidelity. I'm not saying that just because we're on this deployment cycle and because of the war, that causes infidelity," she said by phone Monday from New York, where she had traveled for interviews after airing her feelings in an opinion piece Thursday in The Washington Post. "I'm just trying to understand it, and I'm trying to get conversations started so that people can look behind and see the bigger issue."

Her piece came as adultery in the military has flared up as an issue, following retired Gen. David Petraeus' resignation as CIA director over an affair with his biographer and the disclosure of what officials have described as suggestive emails between a Florida woman and Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan; he says he's done nothing wrong.

It also comes as Jeffrey Sinclair waits to hear whether he'll be court-martialed on charges including forcible sodomy, wrongful sexual conduct, misusing a government travel charge card, and possessing pornography and alcohol while deployed. The 27-year Army veteran was relieved in May of his duties overseeing logistics for the 82nd Airborne.

At the recent evidentiary hearing, a female captain who was his direct subordinate in Afghanistan testified she had a three-year affair with her married boss. But she also said that on two occasions, the general forced her to perform oral sex and that he also threatened to kill her and her family if she told anyone about their relationship. Two other officers testified that they provided nude photos to him, part of allegations involving his conduct with five women.

The Associated Press does not name victims of alleged sexual assaults unless they agree to be identified or come forward publicly.

Defense lawyers portrayed Sinclair's primary accuser, the captain, as a lying, jealous lover trying to ruin his family and career. Defense lawyer Maj. Elizabeth Ramsey suggested in her closing argument that the general was guilty only of adultery and fraternization, punishable by a written reprimand. The defense team said Sinclair had passed a polygraph test during which he denied sexually assaulting the captain.

Rebecca Sinclair, who said her husband called last spring to tell her of the affair and allegations, said she hoped "the Army will see the evidence for what it is and will clear him of any wrongdoing."

In the meantime, the Sinclairs are trying to mend their relationship, she said. And she is pointing to her personal story as a testament to the pressures on military marriages and families.

Her husband has been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere five times since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, spending a total of six of the past 11 years away from his wife and two children ? the eldest, a sixth-grader, has attended six schools so far, Rebecca Sinclair said.

Many military wives know their husbands are unfaithful but stay silent to preserve their families or their financial security, especially because their spouses' own careers can be hampered by frequent moves, said Rebecca Sinclair, who has taught business at various community colleges during her 27-year marriage.

Her husband's affair and the fallout "is very painful for me, very hurtful, but I just really feel that this is something I need to talk about," she said. "Because it's not an isolated case."

Solidaridad 1 | Space Archaeology

When Mexico retired its first telecommunications satellites ? Morelos 1 and 2 ? they turned to their creators at Hughes Space and Communications Company to create replacements. The first replacement was Solidaridad 1, launched along with Meteosat 6 by Ariane rocket from Kourou, French Guiana on 20 November 1993.

Also known as Satmex 3, Solidaridad 1?s name was chosen to indicate its role of uniting metropolitan and rural Mexico with the world. The satellite covered Mexico, with some bands extending to the United States, Caribbean and South America, providing ?voice telephony, data communications, television relay, facsimile transmission, business networks ? educational TV broadcasts ? [and] nationwide mobile services.?

Twelve thousand rural schools across the country received educational programming transmitted through Solidaridad 1, and some relied entirely on these broadcasts.

The satellite was a 1641 kilogram Hughes HS-601 model winged cube with a 21-meter Solar array wingspan providing 3300 watts of power. Antennas on two sides transmitted in the Ku band and C band?and the Earthward side had a 26-element dipole array.

Solidaridad 1 was designed to have an operational lifespan of 14 years, but in 1999 suffered failure of its primary SCP (Satellite Control Processor). The secondary SCP was activated, but it too failed the following year.

On 27 August 2000, Satmex received alarms indicating that the backup SCP had failed. After making 65 attempts to re-establish contact, Hughes technicians recommended deactivation. Electrical energy had been drained as the stricken satellite?s Solar arrays had lost alignment with the Sun. Solidaridad 1 was switched off and declared a total loss. Fortunately, $250 million insurance could be applied to construction of a replacement.

This wasn?t the first failure of a HS-601 satellite ? various other satellites had undergone failure of one or both SCPs through the growth of crystalline whiskers on tin-plated relays. Engineers switched from tin to nickel plating to solve the problem.

The loss of Solidaridad 1 wiped out a variety of communications services for over 100 clients, who needed to be relocated in the following days to other satellites in the Satmex fleet, as well as to other operators. Restoring educational television services to the 12,000 rural schools required manual reorientation of antennas toward new satellites, and classes missed during this period were rebroadcast.

Solidaridad 1 is still up there?today ? stuck in geostationary orbit as it could not be moved to a graveyard. The Ariane rocket body that launched it is also visible.

Congress to investigate Benghazi 'talking points'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawmakers want to know who had a hand in creating the Obama administration's now-discredited "talking points" about the Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and why a final draft omitted the CIA's early conclusion that terrorists were involved.

The answers could explain why President Barack Obama and top aides, including U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, described the attack for days afterward as a protest against an anti-Islam video that spontaneously turned violent and why they played down any potential link to al-Qaida, despite evidence to the contrary.

Administration officials have defended the portrayal of the attack as relying on the best information available at the time that didn't compromise classified intelligence. Democrats say CIA and other intelligence officials signed off on the final talking points.

Republicans have alleged a Watergate-like cover up, accusing White House aides of hiding the terrorism link in the run-up to the Nov. 6 presidential election so voters wouldn't question Obama's claim that al-Qaida's power had diminished.

[Related: Why is Susan Rice in the "hot seat?"]

"I know the narrative was wrong and the intelligence was right. ... We're going to get to the bottom of how that happened," Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, said she doesn't believe the White House altered the document for political reasons. But she said she has lingering concerns about how the talking points were created when it was clear early on that the military-style assault wasn't a simple protest gone awry.

She said Congress has asked the administration to provide a detailed explanation.

"We gave the direction yesterday that this whole process is going to be checked out," Feinstein, D-Calif., said on "Meet the Press." ''We're going to find out who made changes in the original statement. Until, we do I really think it's unwarranted to make accusations."

The inquiry comes on the heels of closed testimony to the committees last week by former CIA Director David Petraeus. According to lawmakers who attended the meetings, Petraeus said the reference to al-Qaida was removed from the final version of talking points, although he wasn't sure who or which federal agency deleted it.

A senior U.S. official familiar with the document, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the process publicly, said the al-Qaida reference was deleted because the information came from classified sources and the links were tenuous. The administration also did not want to prejudice a criminal investigation in its early stages, that official said.

Feinstein confirmed that intelligence officials told her in closed briefings that they were reluctant to name any particular terrorist group without being certain. But, she added, it was clear very soon after the attack that the violence didn't stem from a political demonstration.

Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, told reporters traveling with the president to Asia that any substantive edits to the talking points would have come from intelligence agencies themselves. The only change the White House made, he said, was to correct a reference to the facility in Benghazi as a "diplomatic facility," instead of a "consulate."

"Other than that we were guided by the points that were provided by the intelligence community. So I can't speak to any other edits that may have been made," he said.

Stryker-Indigo launches East Africa Sports; Moves to establish permanent news bureau in Kenya

The newswire, designed to be part of the company's Boxscore World Sportswire (www.boxscorenews.com)
division, will operate an Africa news bureau headquartered in Mombassa,
Kenya. The Kenya news bureau will be mandated to report on regional and
continent sports covering all of Sub-Saharan Africa with special
emphasis on the twenty countries that comprise Eastern Africa.

On the expansion announcement, Stryker-Indigo Vice President, Darril Fosty, said, "Few people realize the diversity of the East Africa region nor the fact that the total population of these 20 countries is 340 million people - making it larger in population size than the United States" Added Fosty, "This is an emerging sports market that is under-served by the traditional brands and global media. As a result, their sporting communities are almost invisible internationally. We want to showcase this region and to work with groups and individuals within these countries to develop future regional brands and business opportunities."

According to Fosty, "The East Africa Sports news site and Kenya bureau will allow us to fully promote African sports. We also see this as part of our global expansion that will make Boxscore a major entity in international sports reporting and product development."

Boxscore's Kenya news bureau operations will report on twenty specific countries. These nations, and their current population estimates, are: South Sudan (pop. 8 million), Eritrea (pop.6 million), Djibouti (pop. 818,000), Ethiopia (pop. 84 million), Somalia (pop. 10 million), Uganda (pop. 35 million), Kenya (pop. 43 million), Burundi (pop. 8.7 million), Rwanda (pop. 11.6 million), Tanzania (pop. 43 million), Seychelles (pop. 84,000), Comores (pop. 798,000), Mayotte (pop. 194,000), Madagascar (pop. 22 million) , Mauritius (pop. 1.2 million), Reunion (pop. 839,000), Mozambique (pop. 22 million), Zimbabwe (pop. 12.6 million), Zambia (pop. 14.3 million), Malawi (pop. 14.9 million).

Due to the language diversity of this geographic region, the Kenya operations will feature articles written in three languages: English, French, and Swahili. "There are an estimated 60-million people who speak Swahili in these countries. We will be the first international sporting news site to have journalists write articles in Swahili so that we can reach this market," said Fosty. A follow-up announcement pertaining to the establishment of the Kenya bureau is expected by early next week.

This is the second major expansion move by Stryker-Indigo New York in the past two weeks. Last week, the company launched South Seas - Magazine of the Pacific (www.southseasmag.com), an online newswire platform covering Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the Islands of Oceania.

Stryker-Indigo New York was founded in 1996 by Canadian historians and filmmakers George and Darril Fosty. In 2010, Stryker-Indigo launched the Boxscore News World Sportswire, a global sports news division. Boxscore News currently has media partnering agreements with a number of independent sporting sites in six countries (Canada, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Turkey and the United States). Boxscore also has contributing writers in five countries (Canada, United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Kenya). In early 2012, Stryker-Indigo announced plans to spin-off their Boxscore News division and to create a stand-alone international media entity beginning in 2013.

Tennessee fires football coach Derek Dooley

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Derek Dooley is out at Tennessee.

The university announced the anticipated firing Sunday after Dooley posted the storied program's longest run of consecutive losing seasons in over a century .

Dooley, 44, had a 15-21 record that included an 0-15 mark against Top 25 teams. Dooley was 4-19 in Southeastern Conference competition during his three-year tenure and had lost 14 of his last 15 league games.

The school will hold a news conference Sunday at 2 p.m.

Dooley had four years left on his contract, which includes a $5 million buyout.

"We very much appreciate the effort and energy that Derek Dooley and his staff have poured into our football program at the University of Tennessee," athletic director Dave Hart said in a statement. "Derek and I met early this morning, and I informed him that I believed a change in leadership, despite the positive contributions he has made to the overall health of the program, was in the best long-term interests of Tennessee football. We will immediately begin the search for the best possible candidate to assume this leadership role."

Tennessee (4-7, 0-7 SEC) must beat Kentucky on Saturday to avoid going winless in SEC play for the first time in school history. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as the Vols' interim coach for the Kentucky game.

Tennessee's 41-18 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday guaranteed the Volunteers their third consecutive losing season, which marks the first time they have finished below .500 in three straight years since 1909-11. Tennessee's loss to Vanderbilt marked only the second time in 30 years that the Vols had fallen to their in-state rival.

The Vols will fail to reach a bowl in back-to-back seasons for the first time since being left out four consecutive years from 1975-78.

"I am sorry we could not generate enough wins to create hope for a brighter future," Dooley said in a statement. "Although progress was not reflected in our record, I am proud of the strides we made to strengthen the foundation for future success in all areas of the program. During the last 34 months, I've given my all for Tennessee, and our family appreciates all this University and the Knoxville community has given us."

Dooley's successor will become the Vols' fourth coach in a six-year stretch. Phillip Fulmer was fired in the midst of a 5-7 season in 2008 and ended his 17-year tenure with a 152-52 record. Lane Kiffin stayed for just one year before Southern California hired him away. Now Dooley is leaving after only three seasons.

Tennessee won at least eight games for 16 consecutive seasons from 1989-2004 and posted double-digit wins in nine of those years, but the Vols haven't earned more than seven victories in any of their last five seasons. This will mark their fifth losing season over the last eight years.

"It's real surprising," junior quarterback Tyler Bray said after the Vanderbilt game. "I didn't think we'd have a losing record. I thought we'd only lose a couple of games, maybe two or three, and we've been getting our butts kicked. It's really not fun. "

Tennessee faces some financial issues as it chooses its new coach. The university's athletic department posted a $3.98 million budget deficit for the 2011-12 fiscal year in part because of buyouts it was paying to Fulmer, former athletic director Mike Hamilton, former men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl and former baseball coach Todd Raleigh.

The football program is on probation until August 2015. The NCAA handed Tennessee a two-year extension of its probation Friday after ruling former assistant Willie Mack Garza provided impermissible travel and lodging for an unofficial visit by former prospect Lache Seastrunk, who eventually signed with Oregon and has since transferred to Baylor. Garza worked as an assistant on Kiffin's staff.

Dooley didn't enter an ideal situation when he arrived at Tennessee in January 2010 after going 17-20 in three seasons at Louisiana Tech. Tennessee went a combined 12-13 in the two years leading up to his arrival.

After Dooley led Tennessee to a 6-7 record and Music City Bowl bid in 2010, the Vols went 5-7 last season and closed the year with a 10-7 loss to Kentucky, ending the Vols' 26-game winning streak in that annual series.

Dooley overhauled his coaching staff over the winter, most notably adding Sal Sunseri as defensive coordinator after Justin Wilcox left to take the same position at Washington. The Vols were confident they could turn things around this year. Dooley said during the SEC Media Days that "you're not going to have Tennessee to kick around anymore."

It hasn't worked out that way. The Vols briefly entered the Top 25 after winning their first two games this season, but they've lost seven of nine since.

Although the offense has produced plenty of points, the defense has allowed 37.4 points and 476.8 yards per game. The Vols haven't given up that high a scoring average over the course of a full season since allowing 42.7 per game while playing a six-game schedule in 1893. Tennessee hasn't allowed that many yards per game since at least 1950, the earliest year Tennessee measures that statistic in its media guide.

As the losses piled up, fans started staying away.

Tennessee's average attendance of 94,642 last year was its lowest since 1989. The Vols' average announced attendance through six home games this season is 91,318, more than 11,000 below Neyland Stadium's capacity.

Dooley acknowledged at his Monday news conference that his future as Tennessee's coach was up in the air. Several players spoke out in support of him in the days leading up to the Vanderbilt game. Junior nose guard Daniel Hood noted how Dooley helped him deal with the death of his mother this summer.

"I can't talk to you about X's and O's because the only thing I know is defensive line and offensive line," Hood said. "But I know as a person, he's one of the best people that I've been around in my life, probably the second most important I've had in my life too.

"This summer, going through things with my mom and things like that, I wouldn't be where I am today without someone like Coach Dooley. As a player, it's hard not to take it personal when people are attacking your coach and things like that. It's hard to separate the X's and O's from the actual person."

Dooley often pointed out that the Vols weren't far from turning the corner. They either were ahead or trailed by one score in the second half of losses to Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Missouri. But they didn't put up much of a fight Saturday while posting their most one-sided defeat to Vanderbilt since 1954.

"I don't think you can say where this program is on one game," Dooley said after the game. "We've had a lot of really good games that we didn't win this year, so the program is certainly not near where we need to be. It's not anywhere close to where the fans want it to be, but it's probably a little bit better than what people think it is. That's how I would assess it."
